Victorian Sabot Sailing Coaching Program

2008-9 VSSA Coaching Program and AGM

We have been very fortunate to retain our Head Coach Micah Shuwalow from last year.

Micah has helped design our new program that is now being finalised. (We are waiting for

confirmation from some of the clubs regarding dates and venues). The overall format is

now complete and can be downloaded by clicking on the link below. Depending on the

responses we get from the clubs there may be some minor changes during the year which

would be advised by Newsletter.

We have split the year into 2 semesters. Semester 1 will commence with a full weekend of

sailing at Black Rock Yacht Club on the 3rd and 4th May. At the end of sailing on Saturday

3rd May, the VSSA will hold its (brief) AGM followed by a barbeque. All parents and sailors

are encouraged to attend the AGM and barbeque.

First Semester will consist of 8 full day coaching sessions at a cost of $280 and will run

until 27th July 2008, the last session held at Albert Park lake.

Second Semester will commence on 10th August at Mordialloc Sailing Club and will finish

on 30th November at BRYC. There will be 9 full day sessions and the cost for Second

Semester will be $315.

Rationale of the calendar (What were thinking?)

We have listened to all suggestions from last year in designing the 2008 calendar. To allow

the greatest flexibility and minimise financial outlays, we have maintained the 2 semester

system. To minimise clashes with school sports programs, we have more coaching on

Sundays rather than Saturdays (11 vs 6). To further minimise disruption of school sports,

(also leaving as many weekends as possible free for other family activities), and to

maximise coaching benefit, we have increased the number of full weekends. We have also

taken into consideration the sailing clubs around the bay to avoid conflicts with their

respective sailing programs and to maximise both exposure and support of these clubs.

Our calendar also dovetails with coaching events organised by Yachting Victoria.

As most of the sailing clubs are now running their own ʻLearn to Sailʼ programs, we believe

there is no necessity to run a VSSA Bronze coaching group this year.

The program this year should be the best ever. We will be including sessions covering

boat care and maintenance, rig analysis and set up, regatta preparation, fitness and

nutrition, racing rules workshops, and sailing weather. We will also be using video as a tool

to improve boat handling as well as an aid to understanding racing rules.

As usual our aim is to run the program to only cover the costs incurred.
