Junior Team

End of Wintersail, Time for the YV Junior Regatta

The Victorian Junior Regatta will be held at Albert Sailing Club on the weekend of 28 and 29 July. This regatta is used as part of the selection process for the Victorian Junior Sailing Team.

Victorian Junior Sailing Team

The Yachting Victoria Junior Sailing Team is open to selected sailors in the following classes Optimist, Minnow, Sabot, International Cadet, Laser 4.7.

YV Junior Sailing Team is offered to a maximum number of sailors per class such that can be coached by one YV coach. For example, depending on the standard and homogeneity of the sailors in a class this will vary the potential size of the team in that class. In 2006 for example, the Sabots had 12 sailors, Minnows 10, Int Cadets 6 boats (12 sailors) and the Laser 4.7 – 4 sailors and there were no Int Optimist.

The Victorian Junior Sailing Team is offered and delivered on a user pays basis.

The Junior Team is organised by the Yachting Victoria Coaching Committee as the feeder program to the Victorian Youth Sailing Team, with the aim to provide intensive coaching at an advanced level in preparation for State and National competition. Coaching areas include refinement of boat handling, tuning, sail trim, strategy, tactics and personal preparation, both mental and physical.

Eligibility

To be eligible for selection into the Victorian Junior Sailing Team, sailors must:

Meet the eligibility clause of the Yachting Victoria Junior Regatta of that year,

And

Not have attained their 16th Birthday by 31st December following the Junior Regatta

And

Have performed at a level at the Junior Regatta to warrant consideration of selection for HP coaching at the junior class level.

Athletes who do not meet criteria 3 above may be included in the team if the Athlete Selection Panel determines that they are of an equivalent standard to other team members and are worthy of inclusion.

Selection to the YV Junior Team is in two stage process

Members of the Yachting Victoria Athlete Selection Panel will be in attendance Victorian Junior regatta to observe sailors and classes in both results and areas such as

• Boat handling skills • Tactical decisions • Personal management • Boat maintenance • Demonstrated sailing knowledge

And

Junior Class associations will be asked to rank eligible sailors for consideration of the Athlete Selection Panel at the same time as the Junior Regatta, based on the previous season’s results and observations by the Class association and Class Coach.

Sailors offered a place in the YV Junior Team will be notified in writing within 2 weeks after the completion of the Yachting Victoria Junior Regatta.

Acceptance of offer: subject to the sailor and parent/guardian accepting and signing the conditions as forwarded with the offer.

Reserves: The Yachting Victoria Athlete selection panel may place sailors on a reserve list. These sailors will be notified in writing and may be invited to attend the Victorian Junior Sailing Team should vacancies become available.

Membership duration is until the completion of the Junior Regatta the following year.

Coaching Program

Coaching is provided as follows

• 4 day “live in” coaching camp 27 to 30 September 2007 at Paynesville and Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club. • 2 days pre Nationals coaching clinic on 1 and 2 December 2007 (Date to be confirmed) • 2 days pre Nationals coaching clinic on dates to be arranged with Class Association. • 4 off water events which will likely be held mid week after school or at other times and venues to be advised.

Note – Dates for pre Nationals and other off water events to be determined in consultation and coordination with class associations.

Cost

The cost per participant to be paid on or before 1 September 2007 is as follows

    •
  • Skipper - $380.00 per participant •
  • Crew (either Int Cadet or Sabot only) - $200.00 per participant •
  • This does not include the cost of the Camp at Paynesville. If the Camp is held, the cost of the camp will be additional to the above.

Jacket

Each participant will receive a Team Jacket. The intention is for the jacket to be presented to each Team Member at the Victorian Sailing Teams Induction Evening.
