Irwin Sails to sponsor 2006 Vic' Sabot Champs

Victorian Sabot sailors,

Another fabulous weekend has passed, and God continued to shine on our summer weather for one more week, curiously encompassing the Commonwealth Games as well! Someone must have a hotline to the man Himself. Let’s hope it continues for another week or two so we can get the State titles in before summer finishes. Well, my fingers are crossed at least……

  • First item to announce this week is the continuing involvement of Irwin Sails in the support of the Sabot class in Victoria. Lindsay has kindly agreed to once again sponsor this year’s Victorian Championships, now known as the 2006 Irwin sails Victorian Sabot Championships. Thanks Lindsay for your help – the work you have done on the kids’ rigs and gear over the last year has been phenomenal.
  • Date for receipt of entries without imposition of late fees is today – get to it, and get your entries to Martin Sly asap – see Entry Form from the link below. We are expecting a big turnout this year with the Nationals in Victoria this Christmas, but specially from the Novices as the younger group moves through, so be there or be square. If you have any queries at all please call Martin Sly (VSSA Race Secretary) on 0418-507586 or Paul Jenkins (VSSA Brighton Rep’) on 0410-479034.
  • Royal Brighton YC has produced a very comprehensive event flyer for the states with lots of information for all participants in this year’s championships – please follow the link below to the “flyer”. Don’t forget the BBQ and beach party being organized for the evening of Saturday 1 April – tickets can be bought from the club at Registration. This will be a perfect opportunity to meet new families to the class and to catch up with old ones. Again all details are on the flyer.
  • Black Rock YC and Mark Jackson, our class coach, hosted Sabot coaching and racing on Saturday and Sunday. There was a very impressive turnout with 16 on Saturday and 22 on Sunday – great winds allowing terrific sailing on both mornings but with generally lighter conditions for the Saturday afternoon session. Tom Jenkins’ new Dinghy Sports Mk IV hit the water and he was immediately on the pace – very comforting for both owner and dad! He and Nick Taylor (new boat now has a name – “Dark side of the moon”) battled it out on Saturday, but club duties dragged him away on Sunday leaving Nick to fight off Jeremy O’Connell, James Tammesild and Emma Louise Daly – see results of the last four heats of the short course racing on Sunday from the link below. Very impressive and consistent performances also came from Aengus Finney (5,OCS,6,3), Penny Irwin (6,4,4,7), and Alistair Dunbar (7,5,7,8), while Grace Charles, Matthew Taylor and Gus Ekberg also put in some good performances to complete all four races in some occasionally gusty and tough conditions. Nice to see Ollie Kalpokas going well in his new boat “Double Black”. Also really pleasing that we had a number of new two-ups out over the weekend – Sam Jackson with crew James, Jack Felsenthal and Matthew, and Zac O’Connell with crew Matthew. Well done guys – see you next weekend..
  • A lost Ronstan bag – a new blue and red Ronstan gear bag (with gear in it) last seen at Black Rock YC on Saturday evening belonging to Katie Jenkins has gone missing. If you have picked it up by mistake, please give Paul Jenkins a call on 0410-479034.

That’s your lot for now

See you all on Saturday at Brighton for the first weekend of the States,

Yours in sailing
