Sabot sailors,
It was an action packed Heat 1 of the 2006 Icicle last Saturday at Black Rock YC for the eleven Sabots which took part – the forecast 25 knots did not materialise fortunately, but there was enough with the big seas to keep the kids honest. Results from Heat 1 can be found at http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/bryc_hmb/results/icicle/SGrp46.htm
Action started early with the big sea rolling into the jetty as a result of the confused westerly, and continued with three boats OCS at a tightly contested start (only two went back – naughty boy James Morrison!). Subsequently, George Davies lost the rig from Grin ‘n Bear It whilst in good position in his first Sabot race (something to do with dad’s poor shackle screwing I hear!), and Tom Fisher and Matthew Taylor both eventually decided to call it quits. However, throughout all this, Jack Felsenthal and Matthew Cherubino, sailing two-up, sailed heroically to complete the race behind Nick Taylor (who pulled out a three minute win after returning to restart), followed by Emma Louise Daly, Jeremy O’Connell, Will Llewelyn (completing an excellent first Sabot race in Just Wait), Alex McGuigan and Andrew Gillies (not having a good day, having already played two games of rugby, and with his dry clothes locked out of reach in dad’s car!).
Heat 2, which is the much coveted and awarded Cock of the Rock Race, is scheduled for this Saturday, same time, same place, same Bat channel! Is it just my generation that remembers this stuff? Many of you have been hounding me for confirmation of the timing for the 2006 AGM and Annual Awards Presentation. Although initially agreed that this would occur as a brunch this year, other events and commitments have intervened, and we are returning to the well-worn theme of an evening presentation instead. This will now occur at 7.30pm on Friday 17 May 2006 so put it in your diary now! Venue unfortunately is not finalised, but it will be at one of the traditional Sabot yacht clubs – I will keep you posted.
We will attempt to keep the formal part of the evening short and get on to the awards as quickly as possible. As has recently become our habit, leavers from the class will also be recognised on this evening for the contribution they have made – leavers this year are Domnech Finney, Jacquie Gurr, Amy Kivell, James Owen-Smith, Richard Taylor and Shane Voyer. Please join us on the 17th in wishing them well as they move into their chosen youth classes.
Details of the 2006 VSSA Winter Series will be coming shortly - as usual it will be split between Albert Park lake and Mordialloc to coincide with coaching committments.
Final details and costings for the 2006 VSSA Coaching Program will also be posted shortly - an updated program of dates is now posted on the Calendar on the website for your assistance.
That’s your lot for now, until next Saturday at the Rock,
The Pres’
