Sabot enews - general update

Sabot sailors,

Heat 3 of the 2006 Black Rock Icicle has been and gone – the promised winds of 30 knots plus fortunately didn’t eventuate until late at night – actual range for the race period was around 12 to 18kts but probably only average 15. As such, very comfortable for those more experienced skippers, but still a bit scary for the younger kids – some of whom decided that discretion was indeed the better option. James Sly let his rig fall down as he was launching his boat causing a broken gooseneck, and some of the kids also failed to make the start (slack, guys!) – all of which unfortunately reduced the eventual number of starters and hence finishers. A great race was had by those who were in the right place at the right time – Nick Taylor taking another win from Emma Louise Daly and Penny Irwin, with Aengus Finney 4th and Alex McGuigan 5th. Go the girls! See http://www.vicsabot.yachting.org.au/?page=22818&MenuID=News%2F10537%2F0 for full results to date before drops. This win puts Nick in first position overall on handicap in the 2006 Icicle– see http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/bryc_hmb/results/icicle/SGrp45.htm for all the Sabot positions in the overall result so far.

Gold Group coaching commences this coming Saturday 13th May at Black Rock YC to be followed by Heat 4 of the Icicle. Be there rigged, changed and ready to start on the water by 10.00am. Please ensure that all Enrolment Forms for the coaching are returned to Ian Gillies asap together with the requisite monies. If there are still queries regarding the coaching please call Ian or Mark Jackson.

The 2006 AGM and Annual Presentation Night is on at Mordialloc SC at 7.30pm Friday 19 May. Sam Kivell and Max Taylor (current Int’ 420 Australian Champions and Youth Champions and both ex Victorian Sabot sailors - Sam is an ex State champion) have kindly agreed to address the kids to show what the future can be for some of our current Sabot sailors. They will tell us about how the Sabot prepared them for their future successes, their sailing program for the balance of 2006 and early 2007 (including a number of planned overseas trips to world championships), and they hope to raise some money from the attendees to assist them in their endeavours. I’m sure we will all be generous with our support!!

As many of you know, much of our winter program (including Wintersail, the VSSA coaching program, and 2006 Winter Series – of which more shortly) is based on Albert Park Lake. New parking restrictions are in place this year at the lake which unfortunately require daily parking fees. These may be avoided (to some extent) by obtaining an Albert Park Junior Sports Club Parking Permit which will give you annual parking for only $10! The form can be found on the website at http://www.vicsabot.yachting.org.au/site/yachting/vicsabot/downloads/2005-6%20Season/Winter%20Series/ap-junior-sport-permit.pdf . An APYC representative needs to sign these off for all applicants - Andy O’Connell as the VSSA APYC rep’ will sign these for you this Saturday at Black Rock if you bring them along.

That’s your lot for now,

The Pres’
