Sabot sailors,
As promised, details of the 2006 Sabot Winter Series are now available – refer link below for NOR, Albert Park Winter Membership form and application for the Albert Park parking permit. All dates are now on the Calendar above also.
Now, I know some new members confuse the Winter Series with Wintersail – they do sound the same! So here is the full explanation:
Wintersail is a long-standing three day holiday coaching program which is held in the first week of the school holidays – 30 June to 2 July this year are the tentative dates. It is run at Albert Park lake because the conditions on the bay in winter can get pretty ugly, and we can be virtually certain that sailing will be on in any wind strength. There are no waves to further put off beginners, and the conditions are generally benign. In fact the VSSA both attracts more sailors to the class and converts more cautious beginners during winter at the lake for these very reasons. If you have any queries regarding Wintersail please call Andy O’Connell, the VSSA APYC rep’ and Wintersail coordinator on 0419 509421.
The Winter Series is a race series for those who wish to continue their racing during winter – either just to keep their hand in, or as a complement to the coaching program. The Winter Series provides six races at the lake on Saturdays between June and August, and then moves to Mordialloc SC for the final four races on Sundays – mostly in September as the weather is getting better by then on the bay. Just to confuse, and we are doing it deliberately now, two of the Winter Series races are currently planned to be raced during Wintersail – on 1 July. If you have any queries regarding the Winter Series please call Mal Parsons, the VSSA rep’ on 9245-7230 (BH) or 9857-7629 (AH)
Albert Park lake is also used for the VSSA coaching program during the winter months for the same reasons – you will note that the dates used for the Winter Series follow the coaching program to ensure an overlap. Coaching will generally precede racing on a Saturday or Sunday.
The entry forms for the 2006 Winter Series can be found by following the link below – information on Wintersail will be coming out shortly.
So, hopefully you are now full bottle on the Victorian Sabot winter activities – see you out there with beanie and coat. Mine is a strong flat white with one sugar!
See you this Saturday for Heat 4 of the Icicle at Black Rock YC…
Yours in sailing
