To all Sabot sailors and their families,
The first 2006 VSSA Winter Series race on Albert Park Lake saw a fantastic turn out of Sabots last Saturday with about 43 boats greeting the starter. Conditions were typical with a light and variable breeze accompanied by some sizable shifts.
Andrew Gillies got a great start and led early only to find himself on the wrong side of a major shift which pushed him down the list. Jeremy O’Connell used his local knowledge to move into first place and held this position for the first triangle. Tim Hannah quietly moved through the fleet to take up first place which he then held through to the finish to win from Nick Taylor closing behind. Tom Jenkins came in a good third. The fight for the next 4 places was extremely close with Jeremy, Emma-Louise Daly, George Davies and Cam Parsons all round the last mark together. There were some good tacking duals with smooth roll tacking and clear air being paramount as they headed for finish. Jeremy held on for fourth followed by Cam, Emma and George.
33 boats eventually finished in trying conditions and there were lots of battles all the way down the big fleet. Great to see our only two-up, Jack and Matthew in “Pirates of the Carribean” completing the race – also plenty of first timers in the one-ups – well done to Callum Patterson, Mitch Fisher, Angus Jackson, Isabelle Giuria and Jack Quibell. Hopefully there will be a bit more wind next time.
Results for Heat 1 can be found at http://www.vicsabot.yachting.org.au/?page=23083&MenuID=News%2F10537%2F0
A couple of notes regarding the results
·         You will note that a number of the sailor’s names are colored RED – this is because these boats have not yet entered the series by completing and submitting the correct forms. These boats have until the commencement of Heat 2 to get the forms and entry fee to our Winter Series Coordinator, Mal Parsons. If not, then results will be removed for these boats going forwards and they will be removed from the series.
·         There are a few blank spaces in the results where either the sign-on sheet was not clear or the information has gone missing. If you are one of these please let me or Mal Parsons know by email.
·         Given the large number of Sabots competing, it is possible that some of the results have gone astray – again let us know if you believe the results need correcting.

A short reminder about 2006 Wintersail – our three day winter school holiday coaching program. Firstly, entry forms need to be by a certain date to avoid late fees – follow link below. Secondly, parent helpers are required for Canteen Duty over the three days Friday 30 June - Sunday 2 July.  We need volunteers for morning and afternoon spots over the three days.  Ideally, with enough helpers, we should only need to do half a day each in the canteen which leaves plenty of time for a walk around the lake, or a long morning/afternoon tea at The Point! Please contact Kathryn O'Connell on 9481 5843 or 0408 558252 or koconnell@svi.edu.au  if you can help out. Thanks in advance!

As I’m sure you have all noticed, mercifully, that we have a weekend off this coming weekend! Enjoy the rest, and look forward to catching up in two weeks time at the lake……

Yours in Sailing
The Pres’
