Sabot sailors,
After a rugged morning training session with winds gusting to 30 knots the sixth heat of the 2006 VSSA Winter Series ultimately got underway at Mordialloc in more favourable conditions on Sunday 20 August.
A 15 – 20 knot northerly breeze at the start moderated throughout the race to provide perfect sailing conditions for the 15 starters.
James Sly in Ididndoit did in fact “do it” and is the first person other than Tim Hannah to win a heat of the VSSA series so far. James sailed an impeccable race leading from start to finish, working the favoured side of the course and, unlike a number of his opponents, kept the short first beat short! The racing behind James was close and intense as the long-first-beaters had to catch up and the next 3 boats finished less a minute behind James. I think I am right in saying that this is the first VSSA series race that James has won, and he did so convincingly – well done. Tim was second (but subsequently retired) followed but Nick Taylor, Cam Parsons and Stephen Collings. Then came George Davies, Jeremy O’Connell, Emma-Louise Daly, Andrew Gillies, Stuart Mitchell, Alexander McGuigan, Jason Voyer and Grace Charles. Congratulations to all finishers on a great effort given the conditions. Now for a southerly!

Heat 7 of the 2006 VSSA Winter Series will take place this coming Sunday 3 September at Mordialloc SC as usual following Gold and Silver coaching in the morning. See you there…
