Sabot enews - Heats 7, 8 and 9 Winter Series - results and reminders

Sabot sailors,

The seventh heat of the 2006 VSSA Winter Series was sailed at Mordialloc SC last Saturday in a fluctuating 5 – 15knot westerly that tested competitors with some big shifts and variation in pressure across the course. Tim Hannah led from start to finish but was chased hard by Nick Taylor. Jeremy O’Connell sailed well to move through the fleet and finish third with George Davies close behind in fourth. Then came a very close group led by James Sly in fifth. Andrew Gillies sailed well to recover to sixth after being back in the fleet early. Result of the day was a dead heat for eighth between Jason Voyer and Will Llewelyn who both sailed extremely well. For those parents and sailors who will inevitably ask, there are some who sailed listed as DNC as they either have not paid for the Mordialloc series or did not sign on. If you have any queries about these arrangements please talk to Mal Parsons the VSSA Winter Series Coordinator on 0400-022844. Full results after two drops now can be found at http://www.vicsabot.yachting.org.au/?page=23083&MenuID=News%2F10537%2F0

Reminder, Heat 8 of the 2006 Winter Series will be sailed next Saturday 10 September and the final heat 9 is scheduled for Saturday 17 September. There is no coaching beforehand on the 10th, but there is on the 17th!

You will see from the link below that the NOR is now out for 2006 Sail Sandy, the regatta we have chosen as the basis for selection of our Team to the Nationals this year. As the link indicates, there will be additional entry requirements for those who wish to be eligible to be selected – these will be out shortly.

Given this will be the first formal Regatta entry for a number of recent arrivals to the Sabot, we thought a few notes could be useful to assist you to ensure your entry is both correct and complete….as follows

So…….what to do when entering a Regatta.

Please read the Notice of Race carefully. The Sailing Instructions will be issued at a later stage and the VSSA will also be providing an Addendum to the NOR to deal with other aspects specific to the Sabot class for this regatta as indicated above.

The Sail Sandy NOR on the website (see below) has the entry form on the last page and the entry form and entry fees are required to be received by SYC no later than 1700hrs on 19 October, Late entries can be made up to 1200hrs on Saturday 21 October provided an additional late fee of $15 is paid

The following paperwork is required to be carried at all times during a regatta and in some cases is required to be provided prior to the entry being accepted:

    • Measurement Certificate for entered boat
    • Skipper and Crew Yachting Australia Silver Card
    • Current Insurance policy or certificate of insurance for the entered boat inclusive of a minimum of $5,000,000 in Public liability insurance (Club training boats are required to provide a confirmation of appropriate insurance from their respective club)

Additionally all boats, skippers and crew are required to satisfy all safety requirements and may be subject to a safety check which covers the following points:

·        a halyard or sail quick release mechanism, rigged such that the crew, on the water, in adverse conditions, are able to lower the sail

·        a properly fitting PFD which satisfies local and YA regs

·        a tow rope of not less than 6 mm diameter properly secured which is at least twice the length of the boat beyond the bow and fixed or lead from a point no further aft than the front of the mast step

·        a bailer of at least 2 litres capacity which must be secured to the boat by an appropriate length lanyard

·        a paddle of no less than 150mm x 150mm which must be secured to the boat by an appropriate length lanyard

·        centreboard and rudder must be attached to the boat so that when the boat is in a capsized position they will not come out of their respective cases - usually by a lanyard and clip. Rudder pins or pintles must be fitted with metal retainers

It is important that all of the safety items are complete and available otherwise the boat may be stopped from leaving the shore until the problem items are fixed. A couple of easy fixes for the following safety items are:

·        Bailer - a large bucket with a straight lip,

·        Paddle - a plastic plate (not the disposable variety) or Frisbee is light, robust and usually has an area greater than 150x150mm, drill a hole about an inch from the edge and thread the lanyard through the hole.

Hopefully this has been helpful,

Yours in sailing
